I have a relative who has an uncontrollable, crazy laugh. She snorts, she screams, and she is loud. One could almost describe her laugh as obnoxious, but we all look forward to hearing it. It’s her signature. Her laugh catches everyone’s attention in the room because it is infectious.
Smiles are also infectious. Usually, the receiving person will give one back if we give one. Our smiles significantly impact what we communicate to others about us and shapes people’s perception of us. Smiles give an approachable reception and the initial impression that we are friendly and perhaps also kind or considerate. A positive smile is an admirable quality and contributes to an overall sense of well-being by boosting your mood and optimism. Additionally, it is worth noting that smiling enhances our appearance, making us more attractive.
If you have ever stood by the church entrance, you see how people arrive. Some people barely made it, displaying weakness, sickness, and pain. Others struggle to walk through the doors for other reasons. I have watched them walk in and stop to take a deep breath before going further. I have watched others stop to lean against the wall as though they were trying to get it together before entering the sanctuary. It appears they are entering with emotional baggage, disappointments, and the cares of life.
In our church communities, someone needs your smile. Your smiles communicate to others that we are pleased they are present. “Welcome to our church. We are delighted you are here.” A smile should be standard practice to acknowledge others in our vicinity, demonstrating, “I see you.” Our smile says “hello” even before we officially open our mouths to speak. Our smile is akin to fellowship welcoming others to our church, church group, and church inner circle with room for everyone. It invites others rather than pushes them away. Our smile is an outward covering, shown and shared with everyone we choose to bestow it upon.
When others see our smiles, it could make a difference. It conveys hope and provides comfort. A smile can break down barriers and invisible emotional walls. Please share your smile with someone today, as it is an abundant resource that can brighten another’s day. A smile is powerful!
A man who has friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24. A Church Professional maintains a pleasant demeanor and consistently offers a warm smile to everyone they meet, especially during church-related interactions because it can make a significant difference and can change the atmosphere.
